LaVerta began her KU career nearly 20 years ago as a Clerk III in Student Records. She served for seven years as a Secretary II with Legal Services for Students and has been with the KU Law Office of Career Services since 1996. In February 2000, LaVerta was recognized as KU’s classified staff employee of the month.
LaVerta creates and maintains her office's databases on students, alumni, employers, library resources and jobs; posts employment opportunities; and helps gather annual employment statistics. She also assists with on-campus interviewing and helps coordinate the mentor program for first-year law students.
She currently serves as backup for the law school registrar and has become an expert on Microsoft Office Access, developing a number of databases, forms and reports. Her artistic creativity can be seen in the flyers, banners and posters she has helped to design.
LaVerta assists with the law school hooding ceremony each year, attends such functions as the Diversity in Law Banquet and the Barrister's Ball, and supports student organizations by attending events and participating in their fundraising activities.
LaVerta has been active in the university's Black Faculty and Staff Council, serving as fundraising, social and cultural committee chair from 1994 to 1996. She also raises funds for the Lawrence Area Reunion Committee and worked part time at Joe's Bakery.
