Media Law & Policy Certificate

Private enterprise and governmental institutions increasingly depend on, and are affected by, communications media. As a result, legal representation in both the private and public sectors is enhanced by an understanding of media influence on the development and administration of law and public policy. The Media, Law, and Policy Certificate focuses on legislative challenges, judicial decision-making, and administrative policy in an era increasingly shaped by information technologies, global networks, and the media.

To qualify to obtain the certificate, students during their first year must notify the registrar of their intention to meet the certificate requirements. The students then will receive the certificate if they meet the requirements for the degree Juris Doctor and earn credits as follows:


Certificate Requirements


A core comprising any three of these courses:
Law 888 - Copyright Law and Digital Works
Law 850 - Administrative Law
Law 958 - Media Law
Law 982 - Regulatory Law and Policy
Any two of these clinics:
Law 955 - Legislative Clinic
Law 959 - Media Law Clinic
Law 976 - Public Policy Clinic
One course from among these that focus on issues related to media or intellectual property law:
Law 867 - Law and the Arts
Law 893 - Topics in the Law of Cyberspace
Law 968 - Intellectual Property
One course from among these electives that address law and public policy issues:
Law 937 or 940 - Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy (written work on a media-related law and public policy topic, for at least 2 credit hours)
Law 943 - Law and Economics
Law 950 - Law Review (written work on a media-related law and public policy topic, for at least 2 credit hours)
Law 954 - Legislation
Law 916 - First Amendment Freedoms:
Law 984 - Research Workshop: (on a media-related law and public policy topic)

The Certificate program director, subject to School of Law policies and procedures, may authorize course substitutions upon a showing of changed circumstances, such as an unexpected cancellation of a course offering.
