Ben Hutnick
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to enter the legal profession. I was born in the quasi-small
town of Exeter, New Hampshire, and came to the Kansas City area by a somewhat circuitous route (5 cities in 12 years).
I now live in Overland Park with my 4 year-old daughter, Ella.
I make the thirty-mile trek from Overland Park to Lawrence every day to learn from some of the best professors I have
ever seen in action. I graduated from the University of Kansas with Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and History,
and after a few years on the job circuit with Sprint and Farmers Insurance, I recommitted to KU to attend Law school.
I plan on becoming a corporate litigator, as I have the legal blood of my mother and grandfather coursing through my veins.
I am currently in my final year of coursework, and I've loved (almost) every minute of it. There are a number of reasons I chose to attend the University of
Kansas School of Law. The campus is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the professors are intelligent and accessible.
Although competition is inherent in legal academia, "friendly" competition takes on a whole new meaning at KU Law. There is
always a professor or student ready to lend a helping hand. I attribute the friendly atmosphere to the stellar job the
admissions department does of choosing applicants who not only meet KU's rigorous academic standards, but also are the
kind of people that everyone loves spending time with.
Another great asset to our program is the depth and quality of student activities and organizations. Last Year I
enjoyed working on the KU Journal of Law and Public Policy because of its academic emphasis, but I also thoroughly
enjoy my work as an ambassador for its purely social components. I also took part in Moot Court, which provided useful
insight into the Appellate process (insight that I have already applied during my summer job as a legal intern), and the
Media Law Clinic which introduced a side of the law I was previously unfamiliar with. My short-term goal is to be in the
top 5% of the class, and my long-term goal is to make millions doing what I love. At times these tasks may prove
difficult to accomplish, but I feel there is no better place to start than here at KU.
