Chris Kaufman

Greetings! My name is Chris Kaufman and I am a first year law student from Denver, Colorado. I have spent the past six years in Lawrence and have adopted the community as my new home. I graduated from the University of Kansas in 2005 and earned a degree in Journalism and a minor in Communications Studies. My memorable undergraduate experience at KU was defined however by my involvement in student organizations such as Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, the KU Homecoming Steering Committee, KUJH-TV student television station, and of course, camping out for basketball games.

Upon graduation I worked for the KU Office of Admissions as an admissions counselor for two years. Traveling throughout Colorado and western Kansas, I visited with prospective students about why they should attend KU. Ironically, while I encouraged high school seniors to visit campus, speak with professors and apply early for admission into undergraduate programs, I was taking my own advice while applying to law school.

I focused on law schools throughout the Midwest, and ultimately chose KU after visiting with various professors during my visit to the school. Convinced I wanted a change of scenery after six years in Lawrence, the faculty demonstrated a genuine interest in my success as a law student during my visit. I found the supportive approach of the professors, students, and administration made KU law unique from any other school I visited. Combining the law school environment with the strength of the various academic programs, opportunities to study abroad, and ability to enhance my journalism background through the Media Law Clinic made KU law the obvious choice for my legal education.

I began my KU Law experience through the Summer Start program, which gave me the opportunity to adjust back to the academic lifestyle after two years working full time. Now, after only three months, I am involved in the school’s Traffic Court and Student Ambassador Program and look forward to further involvement opportunities as the year progresses.

I strongly encourage you to visit KU Law and see for yourself what makes our school unique. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have at ckaufman@ku.edu.
