Sebastian Orosco
Greetings, my name is Sebastian and I am a first year law student. As a military brat, I was born in the
Netherlands and lived in various countries across Europe until my family was permanently relocated back to the United
States when I was fourteen. I graduated from Kansas State University in 2002 with a B.S. in Computer Science and signed
on with the Department of Defense as a civilian employee working on IT systems. In 2003 I was offered a position with
Computer Sciences Corporation, contracted out to the Air National Guard Unit in Westhampton Beach, NY. After successfully
completing the contract with CSC, I moved to Lawrence, KS in June 2005 to pursue a law degree.
I received offers from numerous law schools across the country, but made the choice to attend law school based on key
factors: location, financial costs, and certificate programs. After the first few weeks of attending KU Law, there are
several other reasons why I would make the same decision again: support, student body, and Lawrence
I found that the faculty are truly interested in having the student “understand” the law. The professors probe your
knowledge and ask you questions in class not for the purpose of belittling you or showing the class that you don’t
understand a concept, but to get you to think about aspects that you otherwise would’ve never thought of and they do it
in a way that is not intimidating. All my professors have an open-door policy when it comes to students and they are
great at responding to requests made by email.
When I first arrived I was very nervous about coming back to school and being in classes where all the other students
are younger than I am, but now I am finding that there is an element of camaraderie that exists between all the students.
Law school can be an intellectual boot camp and we are all in this together. Also, there are a lot of opportunities for
you to become involved. It is a great atmosphere all around!
What can I say? Lawrence is an oasis. Lawrence has a college town vibe. There are numerous events for just about every
type of person: Lied’s Theater puts on a host of great performances, basketball and football fans can go to KU games,
outdoorsy people can go camping or hiking at Clinton Lake, and dog lovers can take their pet to Mutt Run.
If you enjoy doing something, chances are you can do it in Lawrence.
I can’t say enough of KU Law and encourage you to come out and look at our school. If you have any questions,
don’t hesitate to email me at corosco@ku.edu.
Have a good one!
