Transfer Student Information
Policies and Standards
TThe University of Kansas School of Law welcomes transfer applications. The Admissions Committee
considers the following standards when reviewing applications for admission with advanced standing:
- A transfer generally can be made only between the student’s first and second year of law school.
- A transfer applicant generally must have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average and an
LSAT score that are equal to or greater than the median undergraduate grade point average and median
score of the KU School of Law class with which the applicant would have entered as a first-year
student.
- A transfer applicant generally must have at least 25 credit hours of law school coursework with a
cumulative law school grade point average of at least a 3.0 (B average or higher) earned at an
accredited law school.
- Applicants for transfer generally must provide compelling reasons for the transfer (e.g., relocation
of spouse or a special course of studies to be pursued at the KU School of Law) or a specific
connection to Kansas or the University of Kansas.
- Upon admission, a $500 seat deposit is required. Seat deposit deadlines vary depending on
when admission is granted, but not before April 1.
Application Process
Transfer applications must be submitted by July 15. The Office of Admissions
makes most admissions decisions by July 31.
Application Requirements:
- A current Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) Report. (If the applicant is currently enrolled at
another law school, it is sufficient that the applicant submit a copy, certified as accurate by the Registrar
of the applicant's current school, of the applicant's most recent LSDAS Report,
including copies of the transcripts.)
- 2. Either (a) a letter from the Dean of the applicant's present school stating that
the applicant is in good standing and eligible to return to that school and giving the
applicant's class rank; or (b) a letter (or letters) from the Dean or faculty of the
school previously attended stating that the applicant satisfies Standard
505 of the American Bar Association's Standards
and Rules of Procedure for Approval of Law Schools.
*
- An official copy of the applicant's law school transcript showing all courses and grades.
- A current University of Kansas School of Law application form and $50.00 application fee.
- A statement explaining the reasons(s) for the transfer request and any connection to Kansas or the University of Kansas.
Submit application materials to:

* Standard 505 provides: "Admission
or re-evaluation may by granted a law student who
has been previously disqualified for academics reasons,
upon an affirmative showing that the student possesses
the requisite ability and that the prior disqualification
does not indicate a lack of capacity to complete
the course of study at the admitting school. In
the case of an admission to another law school this
showing shall normally be made by letters from the
dean of faculty of the school previously attended.
A previously disqualified student may also be admitted
when two or more years have elapsed since that disqualification
and the nature of interim work, activity, or studies
indicates a stronger potential for law study. In
each case the admitting officer shall sign and place
in the admittee's file a statement of the considerations
that led to the decision to admit or readmit the
applicant."
