Legal Career Options Day

On Nov. 6, 2008 the Office of Career Services hosted KU Law's 6th Annual Legal Career Options Day, an event designed to highlight the many employment opportunities available to law students and graduates. Seventy attorneys and 100 students attended the event.

Attorneys from all walks of the legal profession were present, including those in private practice with both small, medium-sized and large law firms; local, state and federal government; business; public interest and the judiciary.

Students met with these attorneys to discuss career paths and job-hunting strategies. Through these conversations, the students learned more about the diversity of the juris doctor. Following the "meet and greet," a catered reception was held to give students and attorneys an additional opportunity to mingle.

The Office of Career Services would like to thank the attorneys who attended Legal Career Options Day. The Office would also like to recognize the Kansas Bar Association, Johnson County Bar Association, Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, and the Lawyers Association of Kansas City for co-sponsoring the event.

The 2008-09 academic year marked the 13th anniversary of the KU Mentor Program for first-year law students. In October of their first year, students are paired with area attorneys and judges, who share their experience and knowledge of the legal profession.

The Office of Career Services hosts a Mentor Reception to introduce students to their mentors. As the school year progresses, mentors keep in touch with their mentees and offer encouragement and advice. Over the past decade, hundreds of students have benefited from this program by learning more about career choices, the practice of law and how to thrive in law school.

On-Campus Interviews

The Fall 2008 on-campus interview program is nearing completion. Data will be available soon. Last fall, the interviews resulted in employment offers for many students. Over the course of 34 days, 70 employers representing seven states interviewed students on campus. In the spring of 2007, an additional 29 employers interviewed on campus.

"Meet the Attorneys" Speaker Series

In the fall of 2007, the Office of Career Services sponsored 16 brown bag programs, ranging from resume and cover letter writing and interviewing skills, to practice area-specific panels. Two hundred sixty-five students attended these events, and 25 attorneys spoke. In the spring of 2008, the office sponsored an additional 11 events. An additional 162 students attended the spring series.

More than 40 attorneys from 28 agencies and a large number of first- and second-year students attended.
