Second-Year In-House Competition

Students in the In-House Competition work on a mock appellate problem before the United States Supreme Court. The final round of the competition is judged by active federal and state court judges. In past final rounds, KU students have argued before United States Supreme Court and Kansas Supreme Court justices, U.S. Circuit and U.S. District Court judges, and Kansas appellate and trial judges. The 2009 panel consisted of three judges from the Kansas Court of Appeals: Michael B. Buser, Henry W. Green Jr. and Patrick D. McAnany. The 2008 court included the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, John G. Roberts Jr. Despite the intimidation factor, the four KU Law student finalists performed exceptionally well. The subject area of the competition varies from year to year. Students choose their own partners and team. The top eight teams become members of KU's Moot Court Council in their third year of law school. Also in their third year, these teams represent KU in various national and international moot court competitions.
