2L | Colorado Springs, CO | Colorado State University | mjohn.koonce@gmail.com

My name is Johnathan Koonce, and I am a 2L from Colorado Springs, Colo. I previously attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., where I received a bachelor’s in political science with a minor in business.

Being an out-of-state student provides me with a special appreciation for KU Law. Upon my initial decision to attend KU, I was anxious about being in a brand new environment, in a brand new state, where I had essentially no ties or connections. However, my anxieties quickly dissipated after entering Green Hall on the first day of classes. As cliché as it sounds, I’ve made some great friends at KU Law who will undoubtedly be some of my life-long best friends.

Not only has the environment at KU Law been welcoming and friendly, but attending KU Law is also accompanied with a great sense of pride. Throughout the application process, one of my main goals was to go to a law school that I can be proud to say I attended. When I travel home over breaks, I make sure to wear some KU gear. There is a great sense of camaraderie with KU fans, especially outside the state of Kansas. Ultimately, it is great to be a part of something so rich in history and tradition. The alumni network is another reason I made the decision to attend KU Law. In my experience, attorneys from KU Law have always been excited to meet with me; we often bond over similar experiences that we share — whether that be going to The Wheel or having the same professors.

Attending KU Law was one of the biggest decisions that I’ve made in my short 24 years of life, and it has also been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The overall strength of the program, the alumni network, the welcoming and friendly academic environment, and the national brand recognition that KU Law provide are just a few of the highlights that ensure me that my decision was worth it.

I couldn’t be happier that I decided to come to Lawrence to attend KU Law. I know my experience has been extremely positive, and I look forward to the rest of my law school journey. I hope to share my experience with other prospective students who will love and appreciate what the program has to offer.
