Librarians in Film & Poetry
Librarians on the Big Screen
The list of movies portraying librarians is extensive. Throughout cinematic history librarians can be seen as old maids with tight buns and slipping glasses, heroes of literacy, and archaeological experts, just to name a few. This representation of the profession is studied in five films and discussed in the display. "Desk Set," "Foul Play," "Something Wicked This Way Comes," "Shawshank Redemption," and "Party Girl" all showed positive images of librarians and their skills at promoting literacy. Additionally an episode of the Twilight Zone, "The Obsolete Man," shows a librarian who is victimized by the state, but ultimately shows the real absurdity of his supposed crime, owning books.
Library Poetry
In addition to National Library Week, April is National Poetry Month. To celebrate we have found some poems pertaining directly to libraries and their workers. Stop in to see some of the funny and serious poems or check out these titles at your local library!![[display case]](bigscreen.jpg)
