Mission Statement
The primary mission of the Government Documents Department
is to make available to library users all U.S. government publications
obtained by the library through (and/or in support of) the Federal
Depository Library Program and to preserve those government publications
which have been identified as essential to the development of the
Law Library's research collection.
Documents Department Personnel
The Law Library's Documents Department consists of personnel in the following positions:
Head of Public Services
Cataloging Manager
Library Assistant
The Head of Public Services is responsible for setting the overall goals of the department and providing direction so that these goals are achieved. The Cataloging Manager oversees the processing and shelving of all documents and adds item holdings to the KU Libraries catalog. The Library Assistant opens shipments, stamps items, labels and shelves the documents, and types the Needs and Offers lists.
Evaluation of the individual in each position is done on at least an annual basis. The Wheat Law Library Director evaluates the Head of Public Services. Based on policies and procedures established for the State of Kansas Employee Performance Evaluation, the Associate Director evaluates the Cataloging Manager and the Head of Public Services evaluates the Library Assistant.
Collection Development
The Librarian continually monitors and evaluates
publications received through the Federal Depository Library Program.
Incumbent develops and maintains a documents collection development
policy which describes materials received through the depository
program, explains their relevance to the Law School curriculum or
overall collection development goals, and outlines a de-selection
process. Other library staff and Law School faculty are consulted
during the collection development process.
