LAWRENCE – Near the picturesque shores of the Bosphorus, five KU Law students and Interim Dean Stephen Mazza just wrapped up their second week of learning and teaching the law at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul.

The KU group is spending three weeks in Turkey through one of the law school’s study abroad programs. Mazza is co-teaching International Tax Law with Gulsen Gedik, a Marmara University faculty member and a former Visiting Scholar at KU Law. Other courses available to students are Criminal Procedure in Europe, Comparative Perspectives on Law and Aging, and War Crimes Prosecutions.

During the first week of the program, British Judge Brian Barker gave several lectures on the rule of law and criminal procedure in the U.K. He also accompanied the students to Bahcesehir University Professor Feridun Yenisey’s home in the Princes’ Islands, a chain of small islands in the Sea of Marmara off the coast of Istanbul.

Learning extended farther outside the classroom doors over the weekend with an excursion to Izmir, Ephesus and Troy.

The Istanbul program is co-sponsored by the South Texas College of Law, Touro College Law Center and William Mitchell College of Law, and is conducted in cooperation with Bahcesehir University.

Bahcesehir University’s modern facilities are located on the European side of the Bosphorus coast in the heart of Istanbul. With a population in excess of 10 million, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey. The only city in the world located on two continents, Europe and Asia, its rich history dates back some 5,000 years.

KU Law also offers a summer study abroad program in Limerick, Ireland, and a spring semester program in London. Professor Mike Davis and 17 KU Law students are in Limerick through July 30.
