Justice Sandra Day O'Connor visited the University of Kansas School of Law on April 12-13. She conducted a "fireside chat" with Judge Deanell Reece Tacha at the Dole Institute on Monday evening, and met with students in a constitutional law class and faculty and students during a lunch on Tuesday. In her introduction of Justice O'Connor Judge Tacha
called her "one of the most recognizable women in
the world." -
O'Connor said during the chat that her "heart sank" when she got the call
from President Reagan that he wanted to nominate her to the Supreme
Court: "I didn't know if I could do it well enough to take the job." -
O'Connor worked for no pay and shared an office with a legal secretary
for about four months in order to secure her first job as a female attorney
at a time when law firms did not hire women. -
O'Connor spoke often during her visit about the need for civics
education and judicial selection based on merit in the United States. -

O'Connor encouraged students to "work at work worth doing" and try to do
some good in life: "With your training, you can." -
O'Connor impressed upon students the importance of learning to disagree
agreeably: "You don't want to make enemies. You want to make friends." -
O'Connor said she didn't have any regrets from her time on the Supreme
Court. She decided early on to put in all of her energy on the front end, do
the best she could then and not look back. -
O'Connor told students she was disappointed that she had not
immediately replaced by a woman on the Supreme Court. She said
that many of the qualified candidates for the vacancy created
by Justice Stevens' pending retirement are women. -
O'Connor joined Judge Deanell Reece Tacha and law students for brunch
