Alex Aguilera

Hello! My name is Alex Aguilera.  I am a third-year law student.  In addition to KU Ambassadors, I am in the Hispanic American Law Students Association, Judicial Clerkship Clinic and Kansas Law Review. I graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in political science and a minor in business administration. At WSU, I was involved in Political Science Club, College Democrats and Student Activities Council. I also worked part-time at a small law firm, which helped me decide to go to law school.

I loved my undergraduate experience even though it was at a nontraditional school. In fact, I looked for the same attributes I loved about WSU when applying to law schools: diversity, work opportunities while in school and a student-focused faculty.

I considered five law schools but found the best fit at KU. First, it instantly became apparent that KU promoted classroom diversity. I noticed the wide array of student groups representing various points of view, ideologies and racial and ethnic backgrounds. Even historically, KU has been an advocate for diversity.  Since its inception in the late 1800s, KU Law has always been integrated. Despite the rampant segregation in early U.S. history, people who look like me have always been able to study law at KU, and I am extremely proud of this fact.

Second, I learned that there are numerous opportunities to hone my skills as a future lawyer. KU has 12 clinics and externship opportunities in addition to moot court competitions and traffic court. Also, KU is very close to major areas of employment: Topeka and Kansas City. Last, I found that the faculty members are very approachable and will do almost anything to help.

Beyond these factors, I wanted a law school that would best prepare me for practicing law. After law school, I plan on practicing in Kansas City because I love the Midwest and have strong family ties in the area. I feel more than confident that KU will take me where I want to be.

Believe it or not, I have a lot more to say about KU and law school in general. If you have any questions about classes, studying, tests or our law school, just e-mail me at alexanderpaguilera@hotmail.com.
