Jessica Lewicki
Hello! My name is Jessica Lewicki, and I am a third-year law student from the mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I graduated in 2008 from the University of Portland, Oregon, where I earned my degree in organizational communications and political science. Currently, I am involved in Public Interest Law Society, the Project for Innocence Clinic and studying Trial Advocacy.
What I love most about KU Law is the opportunity I have had to gain real-world experience in the field and practical skills. Not knowing exactly what type of law I wanted to pursue upon entering, I looked to my professor's examples, internships and coursework to eventually decide on a path in Trial Advocacy. I especially enjoy work in the courtroom; a part of myself I only realized after an internship with the Department of Homeland Security and course work in criminal procedure. After deciding my focus, I truly appreciated the opportunities to practice and learn the law first hand. Specifically, through KU I have been able to work with Judge Steve Leben at the Kansas Court of Appeals and Army JAG Europe. Taking on my own clients in the Project for Innocence and Post-Conviction Remedies has also been an invaluable experience. I know that when searching for my first job out of school, the variety of practical experience I've gained as a KU student will be a true asset.
When not in the classroom, I enjoy exploring Lawrence with my peers, volunteering and trying to fit a jog in once in a while! Last year alone, KU was able to send me to Denver's Rocky Mountain Mineral Foundation Conference and Yale's Rebellious Lawyers Conference. I also planned Public Interest Law Society's Casino Night and even made time to run a few half-marathons. One of the best parts of being a KU Law student is that there is always a group of peers to enjoy your time with outside of the library. I hope to answer any questions you might have about your potential path at KU and look forward to seeing you on campus! Please feel free to contact me at jlewicki@ku.edu, and rock chalk!
