Summer Shiflett

Hello! My name is Summer Shiflett. I am a third-year law student from Overland Park, Kan. I completed my undergrad here at KU in 2008, with majors in English and French Language. I studied abroad in Angers, France and graduated with honors in English. I decided to go to law school because I wanted to get a professional degree that would have real-world application.

I originally chose KU Law because I love Lawrence and wanted to take advantage of what a great value KU Law is. As a 3L, I realize what an amazing education I’ve received at a great school, for a great price. I’ve been in Lawrence for a long time now, but there are still new, fun things to do every year!

When I got to KU Law, I didn’t know exactly how to find my place right away. I was unsure what kind of law I wanted to practice, so it took me a while to find my niche. That experience taught me that there’s something for everyone here at KU Law. With the variety of opportunities to connect with others at KU Law, it was easy to find my niche with the student organization Women In Law. I was the President last year and I am the 3L Advisor this year. Women In Law is an organization devoted to promoting women’s interests through philanthropy, networking, and social events. The organization is a great way to promote an important cause and also a great way to make friends!

For me, the public service opportunities stand out as unique to KU Law. I’ve participated in the United Way Day of Caring, in which students from all over the country got to participate in service opportunities in their communities. I helped wrap presents for the Lawrence Art Center’s Annual Holiday Shop, and it was lots of fun. There are tons of ways to get involved including fundraisers, drives, and service events throughout the year. I really appreciate KU Law’s commitment to public service. It’s helped me feel connected not only to my fellow students, but with the community outside the law school as well.

Another great way to get involved here at KU Law is through the study abroad programs. When I first got to KU Law, I didn’t even know that law schools had study abroad programs. Because I had a great experience studying abroad in undergrad, I wanted to have another great experience studying abroad at KU Law. I participated in the summer session in Limerick, Ireland. I studied comparative law, and had the opportunity to travel all around Ireland.

Good luck finding the right law school for you. I’d love to help any way I can! Feel free to email me at shiflett.summer@gmail.com.
