The Tribal Lawyer Certificate Program Requirements
Core Courses (3 of the following):
- Sovereignty, Self-Determination, and the Indigenous Nations
- Native Averican Natural Resources
- Federal Indian Law
- Comparative Law
- Special Topics in American Indian Law (This encompasses courses that may be taught on occasion and includes courses such as Indian Gaming and Economic Development in Indian Country.)
Elective Coursework: (3 of the following)
- Federal Courts and the Federal System
- Legislation
- Legislative Clinic
- Public International Law
- International Law Seminar
- Alternative Dispute Resolution
- Business Associations I
- Public Lands and Natural Resources
- Water Law
- Local Government
- International Human Rights
- Oil and Gas
Intership: (1 of the following)
- Tribal Judicial Support Clinic
- Students must intern with a tribal legal department, court, or government office, or a private law firm or public interest law firm specializing in Indian Law.

Students in the Certificate Program have interned with the Colville Reservation Tribal Court, the Cheyenne-Arapahoe Tribe Attorney General's Office, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians legal department, Kickapoo Nation Tribal Court, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Supreme Court, the Turtle Mountain Chippewa District Court, the Kaw Nation of Oklahoma, the Southwest Inter-Tribal Court of Appeals, the Cherokee Nation Drug Court, the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri Judicial System, and other tribes or tribal organizations.
